test_http_from / test_tcp_from echoed progress to stdout, which the callers captured into *_OK vars via $(...). Result: 6+ minute retry loops ran silently in CI, and the "$ok" comparison never matched "true" because the captured value contained the full multi-line chatter. Reachability pass/fail counters were also lost in the subshell. Redirect helper output to stderr, leave only the true/false flag on stdout, and move pass/fail to the caller so they actually count.
