Retain the shared resolver and request authority while retrying only failed socket establishment. Usable addresses share one bounded dial budget; cancellation prevents further attempts and TLS still authenticates the original hostname and pin. Connected controls reproduce the first-address defect and cover cache reuse, families, deadlines and cancellation.

Bind the credential-free capture handshake to the polling context under the existing five-second ceiling. Recheck cancellation before publishing a runtime pin; retain established trust, endpoint selection and ordinary declared-member first use. Add local stalled-handshake, peer-closure, no-dial and later-recovery controls.

Refuse redirect scheme, host, port and userinfo changes before any redirected request. Preserve same-origin proxy paths, canonical default ports and IPv6 literals, zone identity, the ten-redirect budget and existing CA/pin/explicit-opt-out policy. PVE and PBS password/token/ticket controls reproduce the previous exposure on actual synthetic sockets.
Change-source: pulse-maintainer
Exercise actual TLS sockets and the PVE/PBS token, ticket/CSRF and password JSON/form flows using synthetic credentials. Retain same-origin proxy paths and the existing ten-redirect budget.
Contract-Neutral: Add discriminating source controls for the existing infrastructure connection trust boundary; no runtime or authority change.
Change-source: pulse-maintainer
Keep explicit URL defaults aligned with the API client and join IPv6 socket addresses correctly. Preserve the legacy bare-host port and credential-free capture without weakening any established pin or verification choice. Cover endpoint parsing, actual IPv4/IPv6 leaves and invalid-authority rejection.
Change-source: pulse-maintainer
Check the public helper selects the HTTPS default port and formats a bare IPv6 authority before dialing. Loopback failures are deliberate discriminators, not native connection acceptance.
Contract-Neutral: This adds endpoint-selection regression controls only; TLS trust, credentials and provider behaviour are unchanged.
Change-source: pulse-maintainer
Reject automatic replacement of primary and known member fingerprints. Admit first-use capture only for a declared new member and a typed local verifier failure; preserve concurrent trust, caller-owned configuration and operator-visible mismatch evidence. Validate real changed/restored TLS leaves through startup, recovery and new-member acceptance while retaining guest-command safeguards.

The discovery-policy check resolved endpoint hostnames with a bare
net.LookupIP while the actual dials went through pkg/tlsutil's process-global
cached resolver, so the policy and the connection reasoned about two different
DNS views. That split is why 108aa4e20 had to skip resolution entirely for the
default policy, which left the injected 169.254.0.0/16 blocklist enforced only
against literal IPs: a hostname endpoint pointed at the metadata range walked
straight through.
Resolve through tlsutil.LookupHostCached instead. The shared resolver caches
answers and lookup failures alike until its next refresh, so repeat poll cycles
cost a cache hit rather than a query and the per-poll DNS volume that opened
#1638 stays gone. With that in place the default-policy skip is removed and the
blocklist applies to resolved addresses again, and the five-minute decision
cache is dropped rather than kept: it bought nothing on top of the resolver
cache, made the verdict trail the configuration, and memoized the fail-open
"resolution failed, allow" outcome for minutes even with an explicit allowlist
configured. Its claim to match a DNS refresh interval that operators configure
through DNS_CACHE_TIMEOUT goes with it.
The SSH backoffs now only escalate for work that ran. A knownhosts manager
suppressing a call inside its own window reports ErrKeyscanSuppressed, and the
temperature layer neither records a failure nor pays for the RPi fallback in
that case. An expired collection deadline is our own budget rather than
evidence about the host, so it holds the window at the floor. Both backoffs
decay once a retry deadline is more than one window past, and replacing the
temperature SSH key on disk clears both maps so a repaired key is tried on the
next cycle instead of after fifteen minutes.

Dead-code audit batch 1: five functions with zero references from main,
tests, or pulse-enterprise (deadcode -test, grep-verified per symbol,
enterprise compile-checked). Also renames the tlsutil test that
exercised the deleted compat alias's target to name the Unverified
function it actually calls.
Skipped from the audit list after re-verification: IsNilAlertPayload
(live pulse-enterprise consumer in internal/aialertanalysis).
The Tailscale system extension on macOS applies an NECP policy that captures
the Pulse process outbound Go TCP connections, routing them through utun4.
RFC 1918 addresses (192.168.0.x) fail with EHOSTUNREACH; Tailscale CGNAT
addresses (100.x.x.x) work normally. exec.Command subprocesses bypass NECP.
Add a subprocessConn type (subprocess_conn.go) that wraps nc stdin/stdout
as a net.Conn with real deadline enforcement (closes the connection on
timeout). Modify DialContextWithCache (dnscache.go) to route RFC 1918
addresses through the subprocess relay on macOS, while Tailscale IPs and
public IPs continue using the normal dialer.
Result: pbs-docker and pi Proxmox/PBS nodes now connect at the transport
layer. Remaining pi poll timeouts are caused by a pre-existing server-side
reverse DNS lookup delay (3s per HTTPS request); fix is NO_RESOLVE=1 in
/etc/default/pveproxy on each Proxmox node.

- Add comprehensive devcontainer documentation
- Add pre-commit hooks for Go formatting and linting
- Use go-version-file in CI workflows instead of hardcoded versions
- Simplify docker compose commands with --wait flag
- Add gitignore entries for devcontainer auth files

When a PVE cluster has unique self-signed certificates on each node, Pulse
would mark secondary nodes as unhealthy because only the primary node's
fingerprint was used for all connections.
Now, during cluster discovery, Pulse captures each node's TLS fingerprint
and uses it when connecting to that specific node. This enables
"Trust On First Use" (TOFU) for clusters with unique per-node certs.
Changes:
- Add Fingerprint field to ClusterEndpoint config
- Add FetchFingerprint() to tlsutil for capturing node certs
- validateNodeAPI() now captures and returns fingerprints during discovery
- NewClusterClient() accepts endpointFingerprints map for per-node certs
- All client creation paths use per-endpoint fingerprints when available

Implements DNS caching using rs/dnscache to dramatically reduce DNS query
volume for frequently accessed Proxmox hosts. Users were reporting 260,000+
DNS queries in 37 hours for the same hostnames.
Changes:
- Added rs/dnscache dependency for DNS resolution caching
- Created pkg/tlsutil/dnscache.go with DNS cache wrapper
- Updated HTTP client creation to use cached DNS resolver
- Added DNSCacheTimeout configuration option (default: 5 minutes)
- Made DNS cache timeout configurable via:
- system.json: dnsCacheTimeout field (seconds)
- Environment variable: DNS_CACHE_TIMEOUT (duration string)
- DNS cache periodically refreshes to prevent stale entries
Benefits:
- Reduces DNS query load on local DNS servers by ~99%
- Reduces network traffic and DNS query log volume
- Maintains fresh DNS entries through periodic refresh
- Configurable timeout for different network environments
Default behavior: 5-minute cache timeout with automatic refresh
