rcourtman 33d318a29e Delete the unreachable adapter Execute/Rollback update path and the unused UpdateQueue
The only production consumer of the UpdaterRegistry is the plan endpoint
(GET /api/updates/plan); every real apply runs through the in-Go pipeline
in manager.go ApplyUpdate, with concurrency held by updateMu/updateInFlight.
The InstallShAdapter Execute/Rollback path (install.sh piping, rollback
binary download, health wait) and the UpdateQueue were never called outside
tests, so fixes made there silently did nothing. Adapters are now plan
providers only: the Updater interface keeps SupportsApply, PrepareUpdate,
and GetDeploymentType, pinned by the new registry proof in
internal/api/updates_test.go.

The orphaned fetchAndVerifyReleaseSignature helper goes with it; its
fail-closed sidecar tests now exercise the manager's
downloadAndVerifyReleaseSignature directly. The deployment-installability
sshsig invariant now names the manager pipeline as the only surface that
fetches release artifacts, and api-contracts, storage-recovery, and
agent-lifecycle pin the same plan-provider-only shape at their update
transport boundaries. Stale adapter references in build-release.sh,
validate-release.sh, and the installtests comments are updated to match.

rcourtman 49412357af Ship the Pulse server install.sh as the GitHub Release asset
Every v6 RC (rc.1 through rc.5, ~30 days) shipped the wrong install.sh.
build-release.sh was copying the rendered AGENT installer into
release/install.sh, but adapter_installsh, scripts/pulse-auto-update.sh,
the root install.sh's own --rc/--stable/--version flows, and the README
quickstart all fetch that asset and run `bash install.sh --version vX.Y.Z`.
Since the agent installer rejects --version with "Unknown argument", the
LXC quickstart, the in-product "Update Pulse" button on systemd/proxmoxve
deployments, and the pulse-auto-update.sh systemd timer were all broken
for every RC.

Fix the build-release.sh copy to publish the root server installer.
The agent installer continues to ship inside tarballs at ./scripts/install.sh
and inside Docker images at /opt/pulse/scripts/install.sh, and is served
at the running Pulse server's /install.sh endpoint — none of those paths
change. Only the top-level GitHub Releases asset moves from agent to server.

Update build_release_assets_test.go to lock in the new publishing rule
and ban the reverse drift, replacing the March 18 "legacy root install.sh"
guard that was the original mistake.

Add a validate-release.sh smoke that catches the regression mode this hid:
the published install.sh must have the Pulse server banner, the --version)
arg handler, must not contain the agent banner, and `bash install.sh --help`
must print the server installer's version-pinning help line. These checks
run as part of validate-release-assets.yml against the post-publish asset
bundle so a future swap back cannot slip through.

Document the asset identity rule and the validate-release.sh guard in the
deployment-installability contract so any future change to the publishing
pipeline has to update the contract or trip the shape guard.

rcourtman 3da835c5bc Publish a distribution path for pulse-mcp
The MCP adapter shipped in slice 51 with one install option:
clone the repo and go build. This slice integrates pulse-mcp
into Pulse's existing governed release pipeline so a Pulse
release publishes a pulse-mcp binary alongside the unified agent
and the install scripts that bring it home in one command.

What ships:

  - scripts/build-release.sh extended to build pulse-mcp for
    the same multi-OS matrix as the unified agent, package
    per-platform tarballs and zips, and copy bare binaries to
    RELEASE_DIR for /releases/latest/download/ redirect
    compatibility.
  - .github/workflows/create-release.yml extended to upload
    the bare pulse-mcp binaries plus install-mcp.sh and
    install-mcp.ps1 as release assets.
  - scripts/install-mcp.sh: bash one-line installer that
    detects platform/arch, downloads the matching binary from
    the configured release (latest by default), verifies SHA256
    against the published checksums.txt, places at
    ~/.local/bin/pulse-mcp (or /usr/local/bin if not writable).
    Honors PULSE_MCP_VERSION, PULSE_MCP_BIN_DIR, PULSE_MCP_REPO,
    PULSE_MCP_NO_VERIFY env vars; declines Windows shells with
    a pointer at the .ps1 sibling.
  - scripts/install-mcp.ps1: PowerShell installer for Windows,
    placing pulse-mcp.exe at $LOCALAPPDATA\pulse-mcp.

Documentation aligned:

  - cmd/pulse-mcp/README.md gains an Install section above
    Quick start with three options: one-line installer,
    GitHub Release download, go install. Documents the macOS
    Gatekeeper bypass since v1 is unnotarized by design.
  - The Settings -> API Access agent-integrations panel now
    surfaces the curl|bash command above the config snippet so
    operators see "install pulse-mcp" before "configure your
    MCP client."
  - docs/releases/AGENT_PARADIGM.md drops the "no published
    distribution path" item from "what it does not do yet" and
    documents the Gatekeeper / Homebrew gaps as next-tier
    follow-ups.

Trade-offs surfaced and chosen:

  - Same cadence as Pulse: pulse-mcp ships per Pulse release,
    not on its own track. The MCP server reads the manifest
    from the Pulse it talks to, so version alignment is the
    natural model.
  - No Homebrew tap or core formula in v1. Maintaining a tap
    is real ongoing work; foundation supports adding Homebrew
    later as a layer.
  - No Docker image. Stdio JSON-RPC fights Docker's stdin
    /stdout pattern.
  - No notarization in v1. SHA256 verification through the
    installer preserves the audit trail; README documents the
    Gatekeeper bypass.

Subsystem contract: deployment-installability.md gains
scripts/install-mcp.sh, scripts/install-mcp.ps1, and
cmd/pulse-mcp/ in canonical files (mid-list entries
renumbered) plus a paragraph documenting the new MCP entry
point alongside the existing installer family.

Verification artifacts:

  - scripts/installtests/build_release_assets_test.go gains
    TestBuildReleasePackagesPulseMcpForAllPlatforms which pins
    the build/package/copy wiring and the load-bearing
    install-mcp.sh helpers (platform detection, SHA256
    verification, install-dir resolution).
  - scripts/release_control/render_release_body_test.py gains
    test_agent_paradigm_release_notes_blurb_documents_-
    distribution_path which pins the AGENT_PARADIGM.md draft's
    install-mcp.sh reference and the four-axis frame so a
    future edit cannot regress the install story silently.

Smoke-tested install-mcp.sh locally on darwin-arm64: platform
detection, install-dir resolution, URL building, and 404 error
handling all correct. The full end-to-end install path becomes
live the moment a Pulse release ships pulse-mcp binaries; the
next RC cut will exercise it.

rcourtman cea2fdd40f fix: add FreeBSD binaries to release manifest and validation
The previous commit added FreeBSD binaries to the Docker build and
release directory but didn't update the manifest generator or validation
script. Without this, FreeBSD binaries would be built but not tracked
or validated, and release validation would fail on the new entries.

rcourtman 7346d48872 fix: add FreeBSD agent binaries to Docker build and fix pfSense boot (#1051)
Two fixes for FreeBSD agent support:

1. The Docker image never built or included FreeBSD agent binaries, causing
   404 errors when FreeBSD clients requested the download. Added FreeBSD
   amd64/arm64 cross-compilation for both host-agent and unified-agent,
   plus COPY statements to include them in the image. Also added bare
   FreeBSD binaries to GitHub release assets for the redirect fallback.

2. pfSense does not use the standard FreeBSD rc.d boot system — scripts
   in /usr/local/etc/rc.d/ must end in .sh to run at boot. The installer
   now detects pfSense and creates a .sh boot wrapper alongside the
   standard rc.d script. Also added -r flag to daemon for auto-restart.

rcourtman 1490a6e6e3 revert: remove dual-key license verification
Restored original license signing key from backup - key was never
compromised (private repo). Removes unnecessary dual-key complexity:

- Remove legacyPublicKey and SetLegacyPublicKey from license.go
- Simplify signature verification to single key
- Remove EmbeddedLegacyPublicKey from pubkey.go
- Remove PULSE_LICENSE_LEGACY_PUBLIC_KEY from Dockerfile and workflows
- Remove dual-key test
- Simplify mock.env

rcourtman 7926524a29 fix(build): use indexed arrays for POSIX shell compatibility
Replace bash associative arrays with parallel indexed arrays to ensure
the build script works on systems with older bash versions or when run
under /bin/sh.

Changes:
- Replace host_agent_builds associative array with host_agent_envs indexed array
- Replace builds associative array with build_envs indexed array
- Add array length validation to catch config mismatches early
- Use index-based iteration instead of key-based lookup

rcourtman d5c93fd226 fix: add cluster endpoint IP override and Windows agent download support
1. Add IPOverride field to ClusterEndpoint struct
   - Allows users to specify a custom IP that takes precedence over auto-discovered IPs
   - Fixes #929 and #1066 where Pulse used internal cluster IPs instead of management IPs
   - Added EffectiveIP() method to cleanly handle the override logic

2. Update connection code to use EffectiveIP()
   - monitor.go: Use override when building endpoint URLs
   - temperature_proxy.go: Use override for proxy connections

3. Add bare Windows EXE files to GitHub releases
   - Fixes #1064 where LXC/barebone installs couldn't download Windows agents
   - Modified build-release.sh to copy EXEs alongside ZIPs
   - Added EXEs to checksum generation

rcourtman c6182b2ed3 feat: Add FreeBSD/OPNsense support for the Pulse agent
Added FreeBSD amd64 and arm64 build targets to the release process:
- Build host-agent and unified agent binaries for FreeBSD
- Package FreeBSD tarballs in releases
- Include FreeBSD binaries in universal tarball for download endpoint

Updated agent install script with FreeBSD support:
- Fixed architecture detection (FreeBSD reports 'amd64' not 'x86_64')
- Added FreeBSD rc.d service handler with proper daemon management
- Automatic service enabling via rc.conf

This enables users to run the Pulse agent on FreeBSD-based systems
like OPNsense, pfSense, and vanilla FreeBSD.

rcourtman b6317fe7b1 feat: add Linux agent archives to releases and improve version mismatch detection
Release improvements:
- Add standalone Linux agent archives (amd64, arm64, armv7, armv6, 386) to releases
- Previously only Darwin/Windows had standalone agent downloads

Agent version mismatch detection:
- New agentVersion.ts utility compares agent versions against server version
- DockerHostSummaryTable now shows accurate 'outdated' warnings when
  agent version is older than the connected Pulse server
- Better tooltips explain version status and upgrade instructions

rcourtman f3e85a7455 fix: remove references to deleted install-host-agent.sh script
The unified agent system replaced install-host-agent.sh with install.sh.
This commit updates all references:
- Dockerfile: removed COPY for deleted script
- router.go: serve install.sh at /install-host-agent.sh endpoint (backwards compatible)
- build-release.sh: removed copy of deleted script
- validate-release.sh: removed validation of deleted script
- install.sh: updated script list for bare-metal installs

rcourtman 6853a0ffd1 feat: serve install scripts from GitHub releases instead of main branch
Scripts like install.sh and install-sensor-proxy.sh are now attached
as release assets and downloaded from releases/latest/download/ URLs.
This ensures users always get scripts compatible with their installed
version, even while development continues on main.

Changes:
- build-release.sh: copy install scripts to release directory
- create-release.yml: upload scripts as release assets
- Updated all documentation and code references to use release URLs
- Scripts reference each other via release URLs for consistency

- Atomic binary replacement with backup/rollback on failure
- Support for Linux, macOS, and Windows (10 platform/arch combinations)

Build and release changes:
- Dockerfile builds unified agent for all platforms
- build-release.sh includes unified agent in release artifacts
- validate-release.sh validates unified agent binaries
- Install scripts (install.sh, install.ps1) use correct URL format

rcourtman 535ae1c70f Fix Windows/macOS host agent downloads for bare metal installs (related to #684)
Bare metal installations couldn't serve Windows host agent downloads because
the Windows and macOS binaries weren't included in the universal tarball. The
download endpoint would return 404 when Windows users tried to install the
host agent from a bare metal Pulse deployment (Proxmox LXC, Debian VM, etc.).

Changes:
- build-release.sh: Copy Windows/macOS host agent binaries into universal tarball
- build-release.sh: Create symlinks for Windows binaries without .exe extension
- validate-release.sh: Add Windows 386 binary and symlink to Docker validation
- validate-release.sh: Add explicit validation that universal tarball contains all Windows/macOS binaries

The universal tarball now matches the Docker image, ensuring both deployment
methods can serve the complete set of downloadable binaries for the /download/
endpoint.

rcourtman 58717c759a Generate both checksums.txt and .sha256 files for backward compatibility
Following best practices for release format transitions:
- build-release.sh now generates both formats from same sha256sum run
- Workflow uploads both checksums.txt and individual .sha256 files
- Validation ensures both formats exist and match

This provides a safe transition period for users with older install scripts
while maintaining the cleaner checksums.txt format going forward. After 2-3
releases when most users have updated scripts, we can remove .sha256 generation.

Related: Install script already supports both formats (falls back gracefully).

rcourtman 19e86f4560 Reduce release assets by removing duplicates
Removed:
- Individual .sha256 files (checksums.txt already contains all checksums)
- Standalone binaries without version numbers (users should download versioned tarballs/zips)

Standalone binaries are only needed in Docker images for the /download/ endpoint.
GitHub releases should only contain versioned archives for user downloads.

This reduces release assets from ~54 files to ~19 files per release.

rcourtman d5e67d8e6b Fix critical release workflow issues identified in review
Addresses 3 critical issues from 4-dev team review:

1. CRITICAL: Fix non-deterministic checksum generation (Dev 2 & 3)
   - Add explicit sorting to checksums.txt generation
   - Prevents #671 checksum mismatches between builds
   - Location: scripts/build-release.sh:348

2. CRITICAL: Fix upload/validation race condition (Dev 1)
   - Change validation trigger from 'release: created' to 'workflow_run'
   - Prevents validation from running while assets still uploading
   - Prevents valid releases from being incorrectly deleted
   - Location: .github/workflows/validate-release-assets.yml:4-8

3. CRITICAL: Fix GitHub token exposure in logs (Dev 1)
   - Replace curl commands with gh CLI
   - Prevents token leakage in workflow logs
   - Location: .github/workflows/validate-release-assets.yml:44, 63

All three issues were blocking issues that could cause release failures.
Remaining high/medium priority issues to be addressed in follow-up PRs.

rcourtman 23ce2c6d11 Add support for Windows 32-bit (windows-386) architecture (related to #674)
Adds build support for 32-bit Windows (windows-386) for pulse-host-agent.

Changes:
- Add windows-386 build to Dockerfile host-agent build section
- Add windows-386 binary copy and symlink to Dockerfile
- Add windows-386 build to build-release.sh
- Add windows-386 zip package to release artifacts
- Include windows-386 binary in standalone binary copies

This enables pulse-host-agent to run on 32-bit Windows systems, which are still relevant in legacy/industrial monitoring environments through late 2025.

rcourtman 4834dea05b Add support for linux-386 and linux-armv6 architectures (related to #674)
Adds build support for 32-bit x86 (i386/i686) and ARMv6 (older Raspberry Pi models) architectures across all agents and install scripts.

Changes:
- Add linux-386 and linux-armv6 to build-release.sh builds array
- Update Dockerfile to build docker-agent, host-agent, and sensor-proxy for new architectures
- Update all install scripts to detect and handle i386/i686 and armv6l architectures
- Add architecture normalization in router download endpoints
- Update update manager architecture mapping
- Update validate-release.sh to expect 24 binaries (was 18)

This enables Pulse agents to run on older/legacy hardware including 32-bit x86 systems and Raspberry Pi Zero/Zero W devices.

rcourtman 32e0d453c4 Add Windows ARM64 support for host agent (related to #654)
Windows 11 25H2 ships exclusively on ARM64 hardware. When users on ARM64
attempt to install the host agent, the Service Control Manager fails to
load the amd64 binary with ERROR_BAD_EXE_FORMAT, surfaced as "The Pulse
Host Agent is not compatible with this Windows version".

Changes:
- Dockerfile: Build pulse-host-agent-windows-arm64.exe alongside amd64
- Dockerfile: Copy windows-arm64 binary and create symlink for download endpoint
- install-host-agent.ps1: Use RuntimeInformation.OSArchitecture to detect ARM64
- build-release.sh: Build darwin-amd64, darwin-arm64, windows-amd64, windows-arm64
- build-release.sh: Package Windows binaries as .zip archives
- validate-release.sh: Check for windows-arm64 binary and symlink
- validate-release.sh: Add architecture validation for all darwin/windows variants

The installer now correctly detects ARM64 and downloads the appropriate binary.

rcourtman fa7ca00250 Fix duplicate checksum in build-release.sh
The checksum generation was including pulse-host-agent-v*-darwin-arm64.tar.gz
twice: once from the *.tar.gz pattern and once from the pulse-host-agent-*
pattern. Fixed by using extglob to exclude .tar.gz and .sha256 files from
the agent binary patterns since tarballs are already matched separately.

rcourtman 035d872269 Add missing install/uninstall scripts to Docker image and release builds (related to #644)
The Dockerfile and build-release.sh were missing several installer and uninstaller
scripts that the router expects to serve via HTTP endpoints:
- install-container-agent.sh
- install-host-agent.ps1
- uninstall-host-agent.sh
- uninstall-host-agent.ps1

This caused 404 errors when users attempted to add Docker/Podman hosts or use the
PowerShell installer, as reported in #644.

Changes:
- Dockerfile: Added missing scripts to /opt/pulse/scripts/ with proper permissions
- build-release.sh: Added missing scripts to both per-platform and universal tarballs
  to ensure bare-metal deployments serve the same endpoints as Docker deployments
